2011 CHARITY RECIPIENT
Babies born prematurely or ill are vulnerable to serious health issues. In Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre’s NICU Follow-Up Clinic, specialists in both neonatology (newborn care) and paediatrics follow these children well into childhood to ensure that, if challenges arise, families have access to resources they need to give their child(ren) the very best chance at a normal, healthy life.
Our specialists have an unparalleled understanding of the problems that children born too early can experience in their school-age years, and how these problems can be solved. We are uniquely positioned to undertake a project which will be a Canadian first.
We will work with schools and teachers to advance knowledge of the difficulties that these children face in school settings, and to use this knowledge
to change educational practice. The ultimate aim of this project is to help children born sick or premature develop the skill sets they will need for success in the classroom setting and beyond, despite these challenges. This project is expected to have lasting implications for their future quality of life.
